All of our researchers are dedicated to understanding every aspect of the skin, especially:

  • How it ages

  • Why it ages

  • What it needs to protect and repair itself!

Protect your skin, protect your DNA

  • Sun exposure can damage your skin's DNA and disrupt natural cell repair

We are all familiar with the benefits of wearing a sunscreen to shield our skin from the sun's harmful rays. But new scientific discoveries show that the problem is both deeper and more dangerous than previously believed.
While some may perceive a glow on the skin after sun exposure to be a sign of health, in fact DNA damage is happening deep within the skin. The change in your skin's color after a few moments in the sun may be visible to everyone, but DNA damage is invisible. This invisible event is dangerous because DNA damage is the direct link to skin cancers and to premature aging.

Skin cells' functions are determined by DNA

The skin is comprised of three main layers: epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. (Illustration) Together they perform the role of protection, moisture retention and support. But most important is the fact that these layers know their roles because of the DNA deep inside each skin cell. Much like a computer program, DNA is the genetic material inside each cell that controls the cell's function. Once DNA is damaged, the skin cells lose their ability to perform their essential roles. Furthermore, damaged cells replicate abnormally and over the years, this damage accumulates accelerating skin aging and increasing your risk of skin cancer.

Sun exposure is a key factor in DNA damage

DNA damage largely occurs as a result of free radical attack. Free radicals are generated by many diverse factors, but are primarily the result of ultraviolet rays from the sun.
Ultraviolet rays are invisible; those most important to the skin are UVB and UVA rays. UVB rays penetrate the topmost layer of the skin. These rays are the primary cause of sunburn, as well as some skin cancers. UVA rays can penetrate deeper into the skin. UVA rays are more likely to cause longer-term effects such as wrinkling, discoloration, a leathery skin appearance, and possibly melanoma (the most serious type of skin cancer).
Contrary to popular belief, a sunscreen with a high SPF does not necessarily prevent DNA damage and resulting visible skin conditions. The reason for this is that SPF ratings measure only a sunscreen's effectiveness in blocking UVB rays. But in fact, UVA rays once thought to be harmless because they produce no burning actually penetrate much deeper into the skin leading to much more damage to DNA and other skin structures.

    The Good News

Scientific advancements continue to enable scientists to find more and more ways to support the skin's natural repair mechanisms. First, using broad-spectrum sunscreen daily is a must as it can protect the skin from the stresses caused by both UVA and UVB penetration, allowing the skin to focus on its normal job of cell repair and regeneration. Secondly, antioxidants can help neutralize free radicals and prevent DNA damage. And last, new technological advancements actually help boost the cell's natural repair process to reverse DNA damage.

Tips: Protecting your skin from dna damage

    • Follow a consistent, life long approach to healthy skin. Even minimal UV exposure can affect you're skin's DNA. Daily use of a broad spectrum sunscreen will help minimize the sun’s effect on the appearance of premature aging.
    • Look for sunscreens that offer "broad-spectrum" or "UVA/UVB" protection or a "PA" rating.
    • The safest option is to avoid sun exposure whenever possible. Minimize exposure between 10 am and 4 pm.v
    • When you go outside, even on a cloudy day, always apply a broad spectrum sun protection product of SPF 15 or higher.
    • When outside for extended periods of time or after physical activity (e.g. swimming, tennis, etc.) reapply.
    • Most people do not apply sufficient sun protection product. Be sure to follow instructions on the package.
    • Use self-tanning formulas or bronzers if you desire the look of a tan. But remember that these products do not usually offer any sun protection, so you should always apply protection as well.
    • Stay away from tanning salons. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a branch of the World Health Organization (WHO), has unequivocally linked sunbed tanning among young people to melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
    • Wear protective clothing that will cover arms and legs; choose a hat with a wide brim. Consider UV-protective products such as some window films, sunglasses, and clothing.

  • Free Radicals and Anti-Aging

If you were able to view your body's cellular activity through a powerful microscope, you would meet up with one of its most powerful enemies. Known as free radicals, these electrically-charged molecules actually attack the healthy cells in your body. They tear through the cell membrane, compromising its function and structure, and ultimately destroying it. One free radical can lead to others in a destructive chain reaction called oxidation, which leads to skin damage and aging. It manifests as fine lines, wrinkles, uneven and dull skin tone and loss of firmness and elasticity. Oxidation is also implicated in the development of numerous diseases, including heart disease and cancer.

    What Causes Free Radicals?

Free radicals are triggered both internally and externally.

    Internal Triggers

    • Our bodies' own normal energy production processes
    • Normal metabolism of fat, carbohydrates and proteins
    • Digesting fatty foods, processed foods, alcohol and caffeine
    • Chemicals and endocrines produced by stress
    • Low blood supply caused by heart attacks or strokes

    External Triggers

    • Smoking
    • Pollution
    • UV exposure
    • Fatigue
    • Toxic chemicals

    Antioxidants: The Free Radical Antidote

The term "antioxidant" literally means "against oxidation." These are the crusaders against the free radicals and the oxidation processes that damage our skin and our health. Some antioxidants are produced naturally by our bodies. Also, we now know that many substances, including vitamins, minerals and certain foods and topical ingredients contain powerful antioxidants which can supplement what our bodies produce. This is important to know because as we age, our antioxidant levels decrease, so supplementation is essential.

    Naturally Occurring Antioxidants

    • Superoxide Dimutase (a cellular enzyme that degrades free radicals.)
    • Glutathione (an amino acid which detoxifies and defends against damage from smoking and radiation.)

    External Antioxidants

    • Vitamins A, C and E
    • Certain minerals, including selenium and zinc
    • Green tea
    • Fruits and vegetables
    • Grape seed extract
    • Turmeric

    Fighting Free Radicals

The best free radical-fighting strategy is a multi-level, antioxidant approach:
    • Stick to a healthy diet that includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
    • Ask your doctor about antioxidant dietary supplements
    • Choose skin care products which contain topical antioxidant ingredients to boost your skin's defenses against sun damage and pollution.

Nutrilite

Nutrilite vitamin, mineral, and dietary supplements are intended to fill daily nutritional gaps in an otherwise healthy diet and lifestyle. Nutrilite products are not intended to treat, prevent, or cure any disease.
Company Overview
Nutrilite is the world's leading brand of vitamin and dietary supplements (based on 2010 sales).

Over 75 years ago Nutrilite’s founder, Carl Rehnborg, discovered the valuable nutrients in plant-based foods and plant compounds. His research convinced him that natural ingredients were the key to optimal health. Today, these ingredients are call...ed phytonutrients and they’ve been the foundation of our products since the 1930s when Carl Rehnborg marketed the first multivitamin in North America.

We practice sustainable farming on 6,400 acres of our own certified organic farmland, where we process plants within hours of harvest to maintain their valuable nutrients. Nutrilite is the only global vitamin and mineral brand to grow, harvest and process plants on our own certified organic farms.

Nutrilite holds nearly 200 patents, is a trusted source for sports and diet nutrition products, and believes that everyone should get the most out of life through the inherent goodness of nature, teamed with the brilliance of advanced science.

Amway

In the early 1930's, Carl Rehnborg began selling the first major line of vitamins in the United States through his "California Vitamin Corporation", which changed its name to Nutrilite Products Company, Inc. in 1939.
In 1945, Nutrilite contracted with a company owned by Lee Mytinger and William Casselberry to become the exclusive American distributor of Nutrilite vitamins. Mytinger and Casselberry started the first major MLM with the same basic principle that underlies the industry today. Each independent distributor would be entitled to make a commission on his or her own sales of Nutrilite products and an override commission on the sales made by those the distributor recruited below them as additional distributors and from those recruited by them and so on.
Mytinger was a salesman and Casselberry was a psychologist. The original Nutrilite vitamin was a combination of vitamins and minerals in a base of alfalfa, parsly, and watercress. They marketed it with the vegetables to make it unique from other products. In the forties and fifties, they sold the material in strength and double strength (Double X) at $20 a month.
Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel became distributors of "Nutrilite" vitamins in Mytinger and Casselberry's network. On September 6, 1949, DeVos and Van Andel incorporated their Nutrilite distributorship in Michigan as Ja-Ri Corporation.
By the late fifties, Van Andel and DeVos and other distributors had been experiencing troubles with their supplier, Nutrilite Products Company, Inc., and Mytinger & Casselberry, Inc. . Mytinger & Casselberry were in the midst of an investigation and prosecution by the Food and Drug Administration for making false health claims about Nutrilite products. A small group of distributors was appointed, with Van Andel as the chairman, to try to work out an arrangement with Nutrilite.
Van Andel and DeVos decided that their suppliers were in great danger of collapsing and that they should go into the business themselves, producing their own products and selling them through the JaRi sales organization which had more than 2000 distributors as members. They put together an organization of distributors called the American Way Association, the name of which was later changed to the Amway Distributors Association (this later became North America's "Independent Business Owners Association International" or IBOAI). The primary purpose of this organization was to allow Van Andel and DeVos to communicate with their Nutrilite distributors in the JaRi organization and to hold the business together until they could develop their own manufacturing operation.
Van Andel and DeVos had to be very careful in changing their distributor organization, with its allegiance to Nutrilite food supplement products. Since the distributors were independent, they might quit. It was therefore necessary for Van Andel and DeVos to have these distributors concur in their plans to set up a product distribution and manufacturing operation; and they discussed the type of products they intended to produce with the distributors' association. Many of the distributors in the organization joined the American Way Association, and began distributing products sold to them by Ja-Ri Corporation/Amway Corporation. There were originally 35 Nutrilite distributors who joined as the first distributors of what would become Amway. The first president of the Amway Distributors Association was Walter Bass.
They decided to look for products which were readily consumable, relatively low-priced, different from those found in retail stores, and which would lead to repeat sales. They chose soap and detergents because they felt it would be the easiest market to train distributors to sell. Van Andel and DeVos began distributing through the JaRi a liquid detergent called 'Frisk', which they renamed LOC (liquid organic compound) and which is still one of the principal Amway products. This product was manufactured by Eckle Company, a small supplier in Detroit, Michigan, and it was one of the only biodegradable liquid detergents available at that time. Van Andel and DeVos, through JaRi Corporation, acquired the company, moved the assets to Ada, Michigan, and changed its name to Amway Manufacturing Company. A few months later they introduced SA8, a biodegradable powder detergent.
In November 1959, Van Andel and DeVos organized "Amway Sales Corporation" and "Amway Services Corporation." In November 1963, the name of "JaRi Corporation" was changed to "Amway Corporation"; and on January 1, 1964, Amway Sales Corporation, Amway Service Corporation, and Amway Manufacturing Corporation were merged into Amway Corporation. Amway subsequently purchased Nutrilite, which is a flagship brand in Amway/Quixtar still today.
Today, "Amway Corporation" has yet another new name, Alticor, Inc., however, it is still the same Michigan Corporation that started as DeVos and Van Andel's Nutrilite distributorship in 1949. Alticor, Inc. owns a number of companies, including -
  • Amway Global/Quixtar North America, a Virginia corporation formerly known as "Amway USA, Inc." that operates the old Amway sales system in the United States and Canada.
